It's the foghorn at the Cape Henlopen Lighthouse, a screeching sea gull searching for breakfast overhead, and the subtle, but endless sound of waves breaking along the beach.

These sights and sounds are but a few of the attractions that make the City of Lewes one of the most interesting and beautiful towns in Delaware. But the list doesn't stop there.

As the oldest town in the First State, Lewes is full of history and charm. The Victorian architecture with the gingerbread trim is a reminder of days gone by. A stroll down the quaint streets can bring to mind images of grand, tall-masted ships, their captains, and even treasure.

Visitors will find downtown Lewes full of interesting shops, fine restaurants, and a strong local heritage. The Zwaanendael Museum, located at the corner of Kings Highway and Savannah Road, offers a unique look at the past of this colorful town and the surrounding area.

Located behind the museum, the historic Fisher/Martin House is home to the Lewes Chamber of Commerce and the site of various interesting and artistic exhibits during the summer season.

Also of interest is the historic complex located on Shipcarpenter Street, which houses a number of restored homes open to visitors. The Thompson Country Store is also open to visitors and features a variety of unique foods.

For outdoor enthusiasts, the Lewes area is next to paradise. The Cape Henlopen State Park has something to offer people of all ages. Whether visitors want to simply work on their tans and relax on the beach or learn more about the coastal area, the park can accommodate their wishes.

The Seaside Nature Center, the Nature Trail, and weekly "Shore Talks" provide young and old alike with information and fascinating facts about the tidal region. Simple treasures, like driftwood and seashells, await those eager to browse the beautiful dunes and beaches.

The tranquil sunrises and brilliant pastel sunsets are part of the charm that makes Lewes the unique seaside resort that it is. A trip to Lewes is one to remember, and chances are that the call of the sea will lure visitors to return time after time to this beautiful area.
